Liverpool 4 – Toulouse 0

A very assured performance by Liverpool saw them comfortably into the group stages of the European Champions League tonight @ Anfield.

Debuts handed to Lucas and Leto, both looked extremely comfortable on the ball and slotted in when needed.

Man of the Match must go to Dirk Kuyt, again working hard giving 110% as usual, and rewarded with 2 well taken goals. A great all round performance however, Benayoun impressed on the right, as did Mascherano in a holding midfield role.

All performances have been very assured so far this season on all fronts, and we look like we are only getting warmed up, a feeling is building that this could be the year that the Premiership can really come to Anfield for the first time, and with the way Rafa has built the squad, we could be looking at a double, or even a treble, can you imagine Jose’ face if we did the lot? :O)

Goed-gedaan Dirk !

Jason McAteer Retires

Jason McAteer at the sharp end

Jason McAteer has announced his retirement from professional football – BBC article.

So to celebrate, here are some great Jason McAteer stories:

Jason McAteer’s nickname before he went to Liverpool football club was ‘Trigger’ – after the Only Fools And Horses character because Jason isn’t very bright. However at Liverpool they give the least bright person in the team the nickname ‘Trigger’ and the person who had that name when McAteer arrived was Rob Jones. So after a short while at Anfield the players found out what Jason was like and decided to give him the nickname of ‘Double Trigger’

There are a couple of stories about Jason McAteer’s exploits. Apparently Jason was in a Dublin nightclub and saw Jimmy White and decided to say hello by yelling a catchphrase that Jimmy would instantly recognize and so Jason yelled out the cry of – ‘One hundred and eighty’

Another rumour is that Jason was filling out a credit card application and is confused as to what to put in the space marked ‘Position In Company’ his source of confusion is revealed when he says to a Liverpool team mate – ‘I’m a central midfielder but the boss is playing me at right wing back’

Another story has Alan Thompson an ex-Bolton team mate of Jason asking Jason to – ‘pass the tomato ketchup’ and the answer Alan gets back from Jason is – ‘Red or brown’

And finally, a quote from the man himself:

“From now on, I want to be known as Captain Sensible. I’m known for being a fool and they called me Trigger. I once bought a pizza and was asked if I wanted it sliced into four or eight. I said just four because I couldn’t manage eight slices!”

Jason McAteer retiring, jasus, now I feel old!

Thierry Henry to transfer to Liverpool?

UPDATE 23/06/07: Henry is off to Barca, egg, face, me.

Rumours are growing that Thierry Henry is moving to Liverpool, the usual “My nans brothers dog saw Henry playing keepy uppy in the car park at Anfield” started yesterday. I am not one for getting to excited about these things until there is a press conference, but the rumour is growing legs and starting to walk.

Apparently, according to various messageboards and local radio stations, Henry has had a medical @ Mellwood today, many posters with “contacts” state they have seen Henry @ Mellwood (although in this age of mobile phone cameras etc, no one seems to have had the prescence of mind to take a snap)

Apparently, bookies have stopped taking bets after a large wodge was placed from the Liverpool area.

Apparently, Henry has also been seen in the NW area looking at houses, and schools.

It’s all starting to add up, especially when bookies stop taking cash! As usual though, there is no point getting excited until it’s official, but what a coup for Liverpool if it’s true!

Henry has been quoted in the past on his admiration for Liverpool, Anfield, and the fans, so it’s not too much of a stretch to believe that this rumour is one that may bear fruit, maybe a lemon, but hopefully a big juicy peach.

Sources:

UPDATE: tribalfootball.com are saying that Arsenal have enquired about Cisse as a replacement for Henry. Swapsies?

FURTHER RUMOUR: The Arsenal link continues with rumour that David Dein could be on the way to Liverpool after leaving Arsenal recently. Rick Parry is on the way out, and Dein has the experience of setting up a new stadium with Arsenal already, maybe he’d like to bring his friend Thierry with him as well?

A C Milan V Liverpool FC – Champions League Final

Champions League final
Date: Wednesday, 23 May
Kick-off: 1945 BST
Venue: Olympic Stadium, Athens

Liverpool departed from John Lennon airport this morning heading for Athens, Greece ready for the Champions League Final on Wednesday.

Manager Rafa Benitez has a virtually fully fit squad to choose from ahead of the game, but as usual he will play his cards close to his chest. So, now I will put the mockers on it and give you my predictions. At least it is date stamped and you can all point and larf “ahahahaha” if I get it all wrongety wrong.

I go with a 4 4 1 1 formation

GK: Reina
LB: Finnan
CB: Carra
CB: Agger
RB: Riise
RM: Pennant
CM: Mascherano
CM: Alonso
LM: Kewell (Yes – from the start)
CF: Peter Crouch

With the main man, Steven Gerrard floating in the space between MF and forward, able to revert to a five man midfield when necc, but also free to attack and maraud at will.

I say, AC Milan 0-2 Liverpool at half time after Liverpool fly out the blocks and get an early goal in the first 10 minutes, putting AC Milan on the back foot from the start. I’d then revert to a 10 man defence in the second half with a large corrugated barrier in front to hold back Kaka and Gattuso.

Sorted – see if I’m not right, disagree I dare ya.

Your thoughts welcome as always, doesn’t mean I will display then though if I don’t agree :)

Liverpool beat Chelsea to reach Champions League Final

Liverpool FC beat Chelsea champions league semi final 2007

Nothing like a penalty shoot out late in the evening to relax one ready for the kip. Liverpool did the usual and beat Chelsea in a Champions League semi final @ Anfield, can’t wait to hear Jose’s excuses for this one, no ghost goals here mate.

So now we await the result of AC Milan v Manure tomorrow night. As well as Manure are playing at the moment, I have a feeling that AC Milan might nick it with the home advantage. So a re-run of the 2005 Final in Turkey, this time in Athens, Greece.

Liverpool win FA Youth Cup!

Liverpool win 2007 FA Youth Cup

Liverpool win the FA Youth Cup tonight beating Manchester United 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out at the end of the second leg at Old Trafford.

Sam Hewson blasted United’s fifth penalty over the bar to ensure holders Liverpool retained their trophy.

Each of Liverpool’s penalty takers were successful in their attempts.

Robbie Threlfall had scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute, volleying in from just inside the box to make the aggregate score 2-2.

The shape of things to come, fantastic result for Steve Highways lads who have been together since the age of 10 at the academy.

Lets see the senior team take a spur from this to ensure they arrive in Athens in May to beat Man Utd again in the 2007 Champions League final. Only a 0 -1 deficit to make up against Chelski @ Anfield next Tuesday.

Red Miltons in Dongen Part II

Red Miltons in Noord Brabant

As mentioned previously, Dutch paper DeStem today featured the Red Miltons in an article building up to the PSV v Liverpool champions league quarter final first leg in Eindhoven tonight (19:45 kick off live on ITV yeehaa!)

So HERE it is, for all you non Hollandish speakers, I have asked for a translation (As I can only understand “Liverpool” and “Milton”) Enjoy.

In other news, Dadio Milton and Derren invaded the Liverpool arrival in Holland yesterday along with our pal Andrew, and obtained some nice pics, I’ll pop them up this evening.
