The Modfather took to the stage @ Wolverhampton Civic Hall last night with a stripped down band including, I was glad to see, Ocean Color Scene’s Steve Craddock.
Kicking off with ‘Peacock Suit’ we were treated to almost two hours with choons covering Wellers career from The Jam (David Cameron’s fave ‘Eton Rifles’) The Style Council (‘Shout It To The Top’) and the full range of his solo career.
Solo wise also what seemed to include the majority of ‘Stanley Road’. While we only one outing appeared from ‘Wildwood’, the title track itself given a rather more sombre, somewhat Oasis sounding flavour rather than the acoustic of the original.
If I recall correctly few tracks came of the last solo outing ’22 Dreams’ and a further 3 new tracks were also delivered to the enthusiastic crowd including a great bunch of aging mods behind us.
As well as the great 60′s washed electric eclectic stacato tracks that Weller is well known for, we also had some great acoustic treats. The Jam’s ‘Tales of the River Bank’ for example which some chaps told us they had waited 20 years to hear live, this particular track ended with Weller and the band slipping into ‘Magic Bus’. Sadly though, no ‘That’s Entertainment’.
An amazing ‘Broken Stones’ was the highlight for me personally, probably one of Wellers best songs. We witnessed the Modfather, now 50, strut and preen like a man half his age. Seeing him live, it became very obvious where a certain Liam Gallagher got most of his moves from. Sure the face shows plenty of signs of the passing years. The enthusiam and energy seems to Still burn bright however one of Englands greatest song writers.
This was the first time we’d seen Weller. One fan told us we had been treated to one of his best ever shows (this after having seen around 50 himself), the man was on fire.
One encor and the night was topped off with a visceral ‘Whirlools End’.
Missed Weller at a larger venu last year, decided not to go at last minute as decided did not fancy the lack of intamacy the arenas represent. Glad we waited, and may now have to go to this summers open air do in Cannock Chase.
I have decided to flog my Sex Pistols tix, read a few recent reviews and decided that watching them wheeze around the stage is something I can well do without.
I turned 10 in 1980 and received ‘The Specials’ The Specials and ‘Madness’ Madness for my birthday, much more my bag and great to hear Terry Hall and the chaps have (as they all do at some point) put differences aside and re-formed: BBC Article
Looks likely that they will be playing dates in September / October, so the Sex Pistols tix are getting traded for something that will be much more relevant to my nostalgia bone.
Plenty of time to sort out a Two Tone suit, white shirt, thin black tie with Two Tone chap on and a pair of loafers, not forgetting the pork pie hat. Can’t wait.
Of course the very same year I turned ten, the Ska chaps influence began to be diluted when I went a bought “Ashes to Ashes” from Mere Green Records & Tapes. The last hurrah for my ska life being thrown out of Sutton Odeon for dancing in the aisles when 10 of us went to see “Dance Craze” a film celebrating the UK ska movement through live performance from The Specials, The Selector, The Bodysnatchers, Madness etc. Thrown out for dancing! FFS what were we supposed to do?

After reading this article on BBC and then the Sleeveface site, could not resist having a go, so here is a quicky. Have a go yourself and join the Flickr group
Right Pop Pickers, compare and contrast the amazingly well received new single from David Jordan “Sun Goes Down”
With the Theme to TV magician Paul Daniel’s eighties childrens TV show Wizbit, which can be listened to/downloaded from here
If I was Paul, I’d set Debbie McGee on David Jordans ass for compensation, how dare he! A cad and a bounder sir.
Yehaaa! Mark E. Smith brings The Fall to Birmingham this month, tickets ordered and on the way to my sweaty little hands.
Thursday 22nd November @ Barfly Digbeth Birmingham: HERE

Iggy pulled it out the bag again, proving there is no need to slow down even @ 60 years of age, he leapt all over the stage, off the stage, humping the amps etc, the man is possessed when on stage, hopefully he gets a bit of deep heat afterwards.
Stooges were amazing also, here are a few pics from “Rock the House” Harewood House, Leeds, 31/08/2007. B & W seemed to suit them, and made up for the fact that a lot did not turn out so well due to the distance to the stage, and the house lights were turned down through most of the set as they were blinding the Igg.

Apple announce a special event on Wed 5th September.
iPod supply being run down all over the place.
Seems like the whole iPod range will be updated on Wednesday 5th September, will the much rumoured video iPod make an appearance at last? After all the announcements, could the one “one more thing” be the addition of The Beatles back catalogue to Apple iTunes? Some are saying NO, but I find it rather coincidental that Paul McCartney has just been announced as a special guest on BBC Radio 1 with a rather big announcement on …. Wednesday 5th September (announced by Edith Bowman on Friday afternoons show)
All will be revealed next Wednesday, locking the credit card away now, and throwing away the key.
