Keeley Hazell takes the jargon out of tech - boosts Apple Macs

It is 00:21 on the 26th of October 2007 as I write this. All Apple whores rejoice, today is Leopard day, the long awaited release of OS X 10.5 will be over @ 18:00 tonight.

Apple have had a great year with the introduction of the iPhone, the iPod touch, and increased Mac hardware sales above projection, now with the release of Leopard, it’s ease of use, simple but powerful built in backup with Time Machine, things can’t get much better.

But wait, how about a celebrity endorsement, from a lovely young lady with a new tech podcast to help us all out, yep, that will provide the final push to help Apple take over the UK home computer market, probably.

Keeley Hazell - Byte Me

So, without further ado, get yourself over to Byte Me TV and check out episode 1, where Keeley Hazell wrestles with the choice between a PC or a Mac with the help of Byte Me TV resident puter guru Gary Schwartz .

It’s a tough choice, with well constructed arguments on either side of the question, but Apple just about swings it, welcome aboard the Mac bus Keeley :O)

Film Review: Rattatouille

Before going to see Pixars ‘Ratatouille’ with the family this afternoon, the only plus point I could think of was the thought of at least 90 minutes sleep in a large dark room. I was just not looking forward to another computer generated animation, ‘Shrek the Third’ killed CGI films for me, but the rest of the family were keen, and we are already going to see ‘Stardust’ later in the week.

So off we toddled down to the local VUE @ Star City and merrily made our way to screen 1. Screen 1 was virtually empty, so we headed up the steps to the back row high above the ground and I settled down for a pre sleep check. Chair danced to the Pearl & Dean advert intro music, and watched the trailers.

Rattatouille

Ratatouille started with a very amusing Pixar short ‘Lifted’ I wont ruin it for you if you have not seen it, will particularly appeal to alien abduction fans (if you can be a fan of alien abduction at all)

The main feature itself shook me out of my GOM (grumpy old man) state and proved that no matter how well crafted the animation, these CGI movies (and any) rely on a decent script and characters with whom we can build some sort of empathy with in a short period of time. Ratatouille achieves both easily, leaving one heading out the the exit content that (of course) it all worked out well.

The story is based on the original French classic ‘Le Rat qui va bien à un Chef’, the authors name escapes me at the moment. Gourmet country Rat with a nose for fine foods ends up in Paris and attempts to live his dream of becoming a world renowned chef after reading a cookery book ‘Anyone can Cook’, encouraged by the spiritual guide of the books dead author, and helped by the illegitimate son of the dead chef acting as a puppet, rat achieves his aims.

Things get in the way of success obviously, things are overcome, turns out nice again (as George Formby once said).

Paris looks fantastic, as does the CGI, things to look out for in CGI films to see if it’s good:

  • Hair
  • Water

Complicated, wayward natural things that are hard to create with a natural look with real physics and stuff, looks ace in ‘Ratatouille’, all the sets and props look extremely authentic, almost real (All the metalwork in the kitchen for example), to the extent you forget they are not, and you are able to concentrate on the story.

I have no hesitation in giving Pixars ‘Ratatatouille’ a free time thumbs up, see it.

I bet I can write a better review than that with a bit of practice, set the bar low eh?

Nintendo Chief real life Bo Selecta?

Big Face Reggie

Above, Nintendo US President and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime. Is it possible that Reggie is in fact a real life Bo Selecta? That Bo Selecta creator Leigh Francis has an incognito day job running Nintendo in the United States?

If you are unfamiliar with the work of Leigh Francis and Bo Selecta, here is a nice clip of their rendition of LOTR, replete with Reggie like facial effects.

And here is the Bo Selecta Craig David for comparison with Reggie above.

Apple confirms OS X 10.5 Leopard release

Apple OS X 10.5 Leopard

Apple today announced the release date of their latest OS X iteration 10.5 Leopard on 26th October 2007. Apple have updated the Mac OS X page to include a countdown and more details on the highly anticipated upgrade to their operating system.

So now to decide whether to watch the early adopters struggle with application incompatability and wait for the first updates to fix, or whether to throw caution to the wind and go for it on release day. Probably the latter as I am such an Apple whore!

Travels In Europe

Zante Beach

Great new site I found today Travels in Europe featuring some great first hand accounts of holidays in Zante (Zakynthos) in Greece (where we did go for our jollydays this year).

It’s always better to get first hand accounts of destinations, resorts and accomodation, and Julia writes with great wit and warmth, this kind of site gives you a much better idea about potential destinations than a brochure will ever do, and certainly helps decide on whether to go for a package deal, or strike out alone and arrange all bits and bobs yourself, turning a holiday, into an adventure (which is always more fun).

Great job Jools, looking forward to your updates on further destinations, and tales of ponkeys and diddly dees :O)

The Last Supper

Last Friday (12th October 2007) saw the last day of the Birmingham based IT service desk at my place of job. A sad day indeed as I was one of the first members of the Birmingham service desk back in 2004, some damn fine people have now left the company, and will be sadly missed.

But of course with every leaving there comes an evening out with the booze and the grub, and Friday was no different. A swift few @ the Old Joint Stock on Temple Row in Birmingham City centre, followed by a meal at Chez Jules French bistro thingy and a nice bottle vin rouge. Rounded the evening off with a pint at the Wetherspoons by the Central Library and a mighty tug on a blunt (made the bus trip back interesting)

So here’s some pics: CLICKY

Good luck to you all in the future. Have Fun! - Nx

Tacheback - the final count

Tacheback finished 2 weeks ago. On that wonderful Sunday I treated meself to a trip to the barbers for a shave and a haircut.

Haircut was ok, but how complicated and time consuming is a number 1 all over. The shave on the other hand was a disappointment. Took 40 mins and although I was initially please (obviously) to be relieved of the weight from my top lip, I quickly lost interest when I left the barbers and found upon a quick tactile inspection (finger tip search) that my face was not as smooth as the proverbial (ala this amusing promo from Wilkinson Sword). So I had to have a proper shave when I returned home, 5 mins with a gillette mach3 and the smooth was back. No more barber shaves for me (unless someone can recommend a place that does it right)!

Here is the final gallery, I kind of ended up looking like a trailer trash from the US, which is ok as I thought it might end up with me taking up membership with the Blue Oyster Bar final amount raised for Everyman Cancer Research >>>>>>

Tacheback gallery

£85.38

Thanks very much to all friends/family/colleagues who have supported me and donated, as in all these cases, every little helps, thanks again. I now have a year to decide whether I will do it again, or just do a run or something next year?
